Report: Spanish Supercopa final scores 2.2m domestic TV viewers
The newly restructured Spanish Supercopa club soccer mini-tournament averaged 1.43 million domestic viewers per game, according to Palco23.

The Spanish sports business outlet reports that a total of 2.2 million people watched the final on pay-TV network Movistar+, an average audience of 1.97 million, as Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid played out a 0-0 before Zinedine Zidane’s side won on penalties.

A peak of 1.27 million viewers reportedly tuned in for the most-watched semi-final of this year’s competition between Atlético and Barcelona, while Valencia v Real Madrid brought in 1.05 million to set a per-game tournament average viewership of 1.4 million viewers.

The tournament was the first played since the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) overhauled the Supercopa, taking the new four-team event to Saudi Arabia as part of a €120 million three-year deal with country’s General Sport Authority (GSA).

The 2020 edition was also the first time that the Supercopa had been broadcast on pay-TV with Movistar+, a subsidiary of Spanish telecommunications firm Telefonica, picking up a three-year rights deal in early December.

The 2019 single game final between Barcelona and Sevilla, played in Morocco, averaged 4.7 million viewers on RTVE. Previous editions of the Supercopa were contested over two-legs, with its record peak audience coming in the second leg of the 2011 edition between Real and Barcelona as the broadcast hit eight million viewers and secured an audience share of more than 50 per cent.
