Sir Gary Verity has emerged as a surprise candidate for the vacant Premier League chief executive job, according to the Press Association.

The 54-year-old Chief Executive of tourism agency Welcome to Yorkshire was responsible for bringing the Grand Depart of cycling’s premier Tour de France race to Yorkshire in 2014.

Verity has played a key role in securing cycling’s 2019 Road World Championships for Harrogate, establishing the UCI Europe Tour de Yorkshire cycling race and bringing the 2016 World Triathlon Series to Leeds.

Knighted in 2015 for services to tourism, Verity has also been a director at Yorkshire County Cricket Club.

The Premier League has been looking for a new boss ever since Richard Scudamore announced his intention to stand down after nearly 20 years in charge last summer.

Verity joins a list of candidates that reportedly includes UKTV chief executive Darren Childs and former YouView head Richard Halton.

The hunt for a replacement for Scudamore, who held the position of executive chairman, has been complicated after Susanna Dinnage, the Premier League’s first choice for the role, backed away from the position just three weeks after being announced as Scudamore’s successor, opting instead to remain at Discovery, where she is the global president of the broadcaster’s Animal Planet brand.

No reason was given for Dinnage’s U-turn, although her decision is thought to simply be the result of a change of heart, while she reportedly had not provided the Premier League with an exact start date.

BBC Studios Chief Executive Tim Davie was also approached, but he too has rejected the league’s advances.

While the search continues, Richard Masters will remain as the league's acting chief executive, while Claudia Arney is the interim chair of the board.
