Report: LFP’s new OTT platform to be called My Ligue 1
French soccer’s Professional Football League (LFP) has decided to call its new over-the-top (OTT) streaming platform My Ligue 1, according to L’Equipe

The French daily newspaper says that the organising body opted for an English name to help increase the visibility of France’s top-flight soccer league overseas.

The LFP announced its intention to launch its own OTT service in April. The organising body has partnered with US video technology company Ooyala to develop the platform, which is due to go live early next year.

According to L’Equipe, the LFP is considering broadcasting some matches from Ligue 1 or the second-tier Ligue 2 on the platform in certain countries. The streaming service will encompass content featuring all 40 clubs in French soccer’s top two leagues, as well as programming from the Coupe de la Ligue, the country’s premier club cup competition.

L’Equipe’s report said the price of the LFP’s OTT service will vary from market to market, adding that the organisation is even considering offering it for free in certain territories.

Speaking to L’Equipe earlier in the year, LFP Chief Executive Didier Quillot said “it is necessary to improve the visibility of Ligue 1 internationally in some territories.”

He added: “This OTT application will create a bit of competition where the league is not well or not at all distributed, like Poland and Belgium.”

Quillot also said that the LFP wants to match the Bundesliga for viewership, with German soccer’s top-flight also set to launch its own OTT subscription service in select international markets from the 2020/21 season.

As it stands, Ligue 1's domestic broadcast rights are held by French network Canal+ and Qatar-based pay-TV broadcaster BeIN Sports, which pays a guarantee of €80 million (US$87.2 million) per season.
