Report: DAZN set to sub-license Copa del Rey rights in Spain
Global over-the-top (OTT) streaming provider DAZN is poised to pocket its first package of domestic soccer rights in Spain as part of a reported sub-licensing deal with Mediaset.
According to Spanish newspaper AS, the London-based subscription platform will provide coverage of 14 games from the first round of the Copa del Rey, Spain’s top domestic cup competition.
News of the agreement comes after the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced last week that 16 first-round matches would be televised from 17th to 19th December.
Free-to-air broadcaster Mediaset won the rights to show the Copa del Rey domestically earlier this month. It reportedly plans to show two first-round clashes - CF Intercity v Athletic Club and Club Atlético Antoniano v Betis - on Mitele Plus, its own OTT platform.
The domestic rights to the Copa del Rey, along with a portion of the competition’s overseas rights, sold for a combined total of nearly €80 million (US$88.2 million) this time round, with the rights covering the three-year cycle from 2019 to 2022.
Prior to the auction, DAZN and Mediaset joined forces to enter the strongest possible bid and fend off competition from the Mediapro agency, the incumbent rights holder which dropped out of the bidding process and subsequently criticised the RFEF for its ‘absolutely exorbitant and out of the market’ financial demands.
