Manchester City owners linked with takeover of Thailand’s Muangthong United
City Football Group (CFG), the owners of Premier League giants Manchester City, has been linked with the takeover of Thai League 1 outfit Muangthong United.

Following local reports that CFG is looking at growing its ownership portfolio with a Thai addition, Ronnarit Suewaja, Muangthong’s Sporting Director, hinted his club were the target.

Suewaja told Bangkok Post: “It is normal for a world-class club like Manchester City with an international presence to expand into the Thai market. Whether it will be Muangthong United or some other team, you will have to wait to find out.”

Four-time league champions Muangthong are currently owned by the Siam Cement Group (SCG) and Siam Sports Syndicate, which also sponsors Vietnamese champions Hanoi Football Club.

It appears that Thailand is the latest Asian country being considered as a next step by CFG. Previously this year it had been reported that CFG is interested in clubs in Malaysia and India. The ownership group made moves to step up its Indian endeavour in May by employing the services of Kwanabler, a local sports agency, to assist its regional aims.

CFG has already invested in two teams in the region; Japan’s Yokohama F. Marinos and third-tier Chinese club Sichuan Jiuniu. Also amongst its ownership portfolio CFG already counts Major League Soccer’s (MLS) New York City, Melbourne City of Australia’s A-League, Girona in Spain’s top-flight La Liga, as well as Uruguay’s Club Atlético Torque.
