FIFA 19 esports series scores 61m total global views
EA Sports has announced record viewership across its FIFA 19 Global Series, after the gaming title’s esports events generated 61 million total views and more than 11 million viewing hours.

The latter represent a 60 per cent increase on last year’s series watch time, while this year’s instalment also marked a 25 per cent year-on-year growth in total viewership.

In comparison, the League of Legends World Championship Finals in 2018 recorded 81.1 million viewing hours across Twitch and YouTube Gaming last year, making it the biggest tournament by live hours watched, according to esports industry analyst Newzoo.

As part of its arrangement with FIFA, soccer’s world governing body, FIFA 19’s viewership growth can be attributed to an increase in the number of the series’ official partners, which more than doubled to 17 this year, compared to eight last season.

EA Sports has also driven a greater marketing push, building out its ‘couch-to-champion’ storylines to highlight some of its marquee players’ entries into esports.

Among its media partners, EA Sports struck an agreement with Fox Sports in April to give the US broadcaster TV and streaming rights to multiple FIFA 19 esports events.

Its coverage included the inaugural FIFA eNations Cup held in London, which will culminate in the FIFA eWorld Cup, which starts in July.

In addition, EA Sports launched an inaugural eChampions Series in collaboration with UEFA, European soccer’s governing body.

Brent Koning, FIFA’s Competitive Gaming Commissioner, said: “We’re thrilled to see a global community rally around the EA Sports FIFA 19 Global Series in such monumental ways.

“Our partnerships with FIFA, UEFA and 17 world-class football leagues elevates our connection to the traditional sport driving unprecedented player and spectator engagement.”
