Copa Libertadores 2020 final heads to Maracana Stadium
The final of the Copa Libertadores, South America’s elite club soccer tournament, will be held at Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana’s Stadium in 2020.

The news was confirmed by CONMEBOL, South America’s soccer governing body, with the iconic venue seeing off competition from seven other rival bids, including five from Brazil, to win the right to host the showpiece fixture on 21st November next year. The 2020 final will be just the second time since 1988 that the Copa Libertadores is decided by a one-off fixture, with this year’s finale in Santiago, Chile the first officially played under that format in 32 years.

In recent years the Maracana, which has a 78,000 capacity, has hosted some of sport’s biggest events, including the Fifa World Cup final in 2014, the 2016 Olympic Games soccer medal matches and the 2019 Copa America final. It first opened its doors in 1950 to host the fourth Fifa World Cup.

CONMEBOL has also revealed that the second final of the continent’s second-tier club competition, the Copa Sudamericana, also being played under the new format, will be held at the Estadio Mario Alberto Kempes in Cordoba, Argentina in 2020.

The second legs of this year’s Copa Libertadores semi-finals kick-off next week, with Argentina’s Boca Juniors facing bitter rivals and defending champions River Plate, while Flamengo host Brazilian counterparts Gremio.

The games take place on 23rd and 24th October respectively, with River taking a 2-0 lead with them to La Bombonera, while Flamengo and Gremio’s go into their match tied on one goal apiece. The final will be held on 23rd November at the Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Pradanos in Santiago.
