Colombia pips Argentina to 2020 Copa America final
Colombia president Ivan Duque has revealed that the country will host the final of next year’s Copa America, South American soccer’s flagship national team tournament.

CONMEBOL, the regional governing body, had already confirmed that Colombia would be co-hosting the 47th edition of the tournament, but was yet to announce where the final would take place.

However, Duque has now announced that the game will be played at the Estadio Metropolitano Roberto Meléndez in the port city of Barranquilla, with local mayor Alejandro Char promising the event will be a “gala”.

"The 2020 Copa America final will take place in Colombia, which has been one of the greatest desires of all of us," Duque said at a public appearance, adding that CONMEBOL president Alejandro Dominguez had informed him of the “great news”.

Next year’s tournament will be split into two groups, with Colombia, Brazil, Venezuela, Ecuador and Peru competing in the northern zone, while Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, Bolivia and Chile will enter the southern section. Australia and Qatar, who have been invited to play in the competition, have yet to be assigned a group.

The 2020 Copa America, the first to be hosted by two countries, will mark the second successive year the tournament has been played in order to fit CONMEBOL’s plans to align the competition with the Uefa European Championships.

The tournament has been played in odd years for most of its history, but will now take place on a quadrennial basis and two years apart from the Fifa World Cup.

This year’s Copa America is ongoing in Brazil and has reached the quarter-final stage, with Venezuela taking on Argentina in the next game on Friday.
