Telemundo lands 2019 Copa America US-Spanish language rights
The US-Spanish language broadcaster has been enjoying excellent viewing figures during the ongoing Fifa World Cup and will continue to serve its soccer viewership when eight-times winners Brazil host the 2019 edition of the South American tournament.
Telemundo Deportes president Ray Warren said the deal, brokered by global sports marketing agency MP & Silva, builds on the network’s desire to provide for America’s passionate Spanish-speaking soccer fans.
"It is a world class event and perfectly aligns with our approach to partner with owners of the biggest and best global sporting events to bring them to our Spanish-language audience in the US," he said.
The president of the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL), Alejandro Dominguez, added: "This partnership will ensure that all Spanish-speaking football lovers in the US. territory will enjoy the Copa America 2019."
While the acquisition of the Copa America rights are a coup for Telemundo, the deal represents a blow to BeIN who had televised the Spanish-language and English-language broadcasts of Copa America 2015, which reached nearly 14 million viewers in the United States.
Telemundo Deportes is also the exclusive Spanish-language provider for all 64 games at this summer's 2018 Fifa World Cup in Russia, offering more than 1,500 hours of coverage and streaming more than 1.6 billion minutes. Since the tournament started, the network claims it has reached more than 30 million viewers. From this tournament alone, the network accounts for the four most livestreamed events in Spanish-language history.
The network has the Spanish-language rights to the World Cup through 2026, as well as the Summer Olympic Games through 2032.
In Brazil, Chile will be looking to defend their 2016 Copa America title and earn a spot at the 2021 Fifa Confederations Cup. As well as the traditional South American nations, Japan and Qatar have also been invited to compete.
