Sky Deutschland gets ultra HD rights for 2018 Fifa World Cup
Pay-TV broadcaster Sky Deutschland has acquired exclusive ultra high definition (UHD) rights in Germany to the 2018 Fifa World Cup national team soccer tournament.

The sublicensing deal was agreed with SportA, the sports rights agency of public-service broadcasters ARD and ZDF, who hold the World Cup rights in Germany.

Sky will show 25 matches, including the ‘match of the day’ on all tournament days and all of Germany’s games.

Coverage will also include the opening match of the tournament, two quarter-finals, both semi-finals, the third place play-off and the final.

The games will be broadcast on the Sky Sport UHD channel, with ARD and ZDF retaining rights to all games in SD and HD resolution.

Sky has shown German Bundesliga and Uefa Champions League soccer matches in UHD since October 2016.

“With the first and exclusive broadcast of the Fifa World Cup 2018 in UHD, Sky Deutschland underscores its role as a pioneer and innovation driver in German television,” said Holger Enßlin, managing director of legal, regulatory and distribution at Sky Deutschland. “As it was the case in 2006 with the first transmission of a World Cup in HD, Sky customers will again be the first to enjoy the latest technology and an unprecedented viewing experience. The UHD broadcast of 25 matches from Russia is another milestone for the distribution of Ultra HD in Germany.”

The 2018 Fifa World Cup is due to get underway on 14th June. Germany, who are the defending champions, will take on Mexico on 17th June in their first game of the tournament.
