Luis Rubiales elected president of Spanish Football Federation
Luis Rubiales has been named the new president of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).

The 40-year-old replaces Ángel María Villar Llona in the role. Villar was suspended by the RFEF last summer following his arrest as part of an anti-corruption investigation in Spain.

He was detained in July on allegations of collusion, embezzlement and falsifying documents and spent two weeks in custody before being released on bail.

Villar had held the post since 1988, and also stepped down from his vice presidency roles with soccer’s global governing body Fifa and European soccer’s governing body Uefa last year following the investigation.

Rubiales polled 80 votes to 56 for rival Juan Luis Larrea, who was treasurer during Villar's 29-year rule and who had been acting as interim president.

His term will run until after the Uefa Euro 2020 national team tournament.

Rubiales, who also served as the president of the Players’ Union, is a former soccer player. He played for fourth-tier Spanish soccer team Xerez and La Liga’s Levante, before finishing his career at Scottish side Hamilton Academical in 2009.

Rubiales said: “I’ll give my everything for the federation. Women, football sala [futsal], beach soccer. All of those games need to be involved with us here. We have taken a step towards the future. Nobody will beat us in terms of work; the change is unstoppable.”
