Houston Dynamo unveil MD Anderson as shirt sponsor
Deal marks first time an MLS team has signed a cause-related shirt partnership

Major League Soccer (MLS) team the Houston Dynamo have signed a multi-year shirt sponsorship deal with MD Anderson Cancer Center, marking the first season-long cause-related jersey partnership in the history of MLS.

The agreement will see the organisation’s strike-through-cancer logo displayed on the front of the US team’s playing shirts from the beginning of the 2019 MLS season, which begins in March next year. The Dynamo were the only MLS team to go the entire 2018 campaign without a shirt sponsor.

The co-branded jersey symbolises the commitment of the two organisations to encourage fans, club partners and the Houston community to ‘make cancer history’, the Dynamo said in a statement.

“I am sure that our fans will feel that same pride in knowing that they are not only supporting a club, but are also supporting a truly worthwhile mission,” added Dynamo owner Gabriel Brener.

“The opportunity for our club to help MD Anderson promote such an important cause – to end cancer – is something that was very much worth waiting for and one that excites and motivates everyone at our club.”

As part of the multi-year partnership, the Dynamo and MD Anderson plan to stage cancer prevention education, survivorship celebrations and philanthropic initiatives, to support the organisation’s mission to end cancer.  In addition, the club will donate a portion of single-game ticket sales to MD Anderson. Fans will also be offered the option to donate to the organisation during the purchase process.

As well as revealing their new shirt sponsor, the Dynamo simultaneously announced that their BBVA Compass Stadium will go completely smoke and tobacco-free by 2019.

“Today is the start of something great,” said Peter Pisters, President of MD Anderson. “We applaud the Houston Dynamo for making a bold commitment to the health of its fans, players and staff by creating a tobacco- and smoke-free environment for all to enjoy.

"We are proud to align with this forward-thinking organisation as we work together to promote cancer prevention and to advance innovative cancer research and patient programs.”
