Copa Libertadores final to be played in Spain
CONMEBOL has confirmed that Argentinian soccer rivals River Plate and Boca Juniors will play the rescheduled second leg of the Copa Libertadores final at Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu in Spain.
The decision to move the final of South American soccer’s premier club competition away from the continent comes after the game was twice postponed last weekend following an attack by River fans on the Boca team bus.
The incident outside River’s El Monumental stadium saw a number of Boca’s players taken to hospital having been cut by the glass from broken windows and affected by tear gas used by police to disperse the crowds.
Boca had pushed for the trophy to be awarded to them without having to play the second leg, but South American soccer’s governing body has decided that the game will now take place on 9th December in the Spanish capital - more than 6,000 miles away from Buenos Aires.
‘Football should be a sports party, where all fans can attend,’ CONMEBOL President Alejandro Dominguez said in a statement. ‘We want to remind South America and the world that football can and should be lived in peace, and that sports passion and respect for the rival are complementary values that can coexist.’
Various venues were rumoured to be interested in staging the second leg of the final, with Qatar reportedly making CONMEBOL a lucrative US$13.5 million offer to bring the fixture to Doha.
The game will mark the first time that the final of the Copa Libertadores - which is the CONMEBOL equivalent of the Uefa Champions League - has been played outside of South America.
On the pitch, the tie remains in the balance after Boca and River played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in the first leg at La Bombonera.
