NBC-owned channel nabs sublicense to rearranged soccer showpiece.

Broadcaster Telemundo has acquired the US Spanish language rights to the rearranged Copa Libertadores final between Boca Juniors and River Plate.

Fox Deportes had rights to both legs of the originally scheduled final of South America’s top club soccer tournament but has decided to sublicense the game to NBC-owned Telemundo.

Telemundo is also the rights holder for the Fifa Club World Cup, where the winner of Sunday’s final will progress to.

Ray Warren, President of Telemundo Deportes said: “This acquisition is another step forward in our commitment to continue adding the best and biggest sports to our programming lineup.

“We are excited to bring Telemundo viewers one of the most anticipated matchups of the year, complemented by extensive pre/post coverage led by our renowned experts.”

Fox’s English and Spanish rights to the Copa Libertadores expire at the end of 2018 but the broadcaster has made no announcement regarding an English language broadcast of the game.

The original game was postponed following violence prior to the final’s second-leg on 25th November outside River’s Estdadio Monumental in Buenos Aires. An attack on the Boca Juniors’ team bus left players with injuries and unable to compete on that day or the hastily rearranged kick-off 24 hours later.

It will now be played at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid on 9th December  after governing body CONMEBOL opted to take the game outside of Argentina – a decision River Plate have labelled ‘incomprehensible’.

The rearranged game marks the first time that the final of the Copa Libertadores will be played outside of South America. The first leg ended in a 2-2 draw.
