Birmingham City team up with Cure Leukaemia
In support of the charity, the English second-tier team will be involved in Cure Leukaemia’s 2018 events, including local live music quizzes, the Brindleyplace Dragon Boat Race, cycling race Velo Birmingham, and the Birmingham International Marathon.
The charity has had several partnerships with soccer players, including with former Wolverhampton Wanderers and Crystal Palace player Geoff Thomas, who became a patron after his own experiences with the disease, and Wolves’ goalkeeper Carl Ikeme, who recently raised over £75,000 for Cure Leukaemia after his own diagnosis in June.
"As a proud Brummie and Bluenose, I think that it is fantastic that Birmingham City will be supporting Cure Leukaemia,” said Glynn Purnell, a Cure Leukaemia trustee. "The work of the charity is having an impact on a global scale and it’s great to think that Birmingham is leading the fight against blood cancer. Birmingham City are such a generous club and I’m sure that they will do great things with Cure Leukaemia.”
Ian Dutton, head of commercial at Birmingham City, added: “Having got to know the team at Cure Leukaemia, it quickly became apparent that they were an extremely proactive and hardworking charity. It was very important to the club that a Birmingham based charity was chosen and the amazing work Cure Leukaemia do made it an easier decision to make them one of Blues’ official charity partners.
"We are thrilled to be able to support such a fantastic cause and look forward to working together to raise as much awareness and funds for the charity as possible.”
Birmingham City finished 19th in the Championship in 2016/17, and their 2017/18 season has kicked off to a disheartening start, with seven defeats in their opening 11 games to leave them third from bottom in the table. The Blues lost 1-0 away to Norwich City, and will host Cardiff City on Friday, where they will look for a much-needed win.
