Serie A releases package for fixtures to be shown in cinemas
Deal part of the league’s non-exclusive audiovisual rights.

Matches from Italian soccer’s top tier, Serie A, will be shown in some of the country’s cinemas and theatres from the start of the 2018/19 season, which kicks off on 19th August.

The arrangement is the result of the league’s non-exclusive audiovisual rights deal, which – among others – features a package reserved for ‘cinemas and theatres’.

The deal will allow games to be shown in public cinemas that are based more than 80km from the location of the relevant match. The innovative scheme is to work on a game-by-game basis, with establishments interested in providing coverage of a fixture having to subscribe online to Serie A for permission to stream the game, invoking a €150 (US$175) fee.

According to a report in Italian daily business newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore, 60 per cent of the income from the plan will go to the league, with 40 per cent being kept by theatre owners.
