The Qatar Football Association (QFA) has signed a four-year partnership with the national subsidiary of Anglo-Dutch multinational oil and gas company Shell.

Qatar Shell will be the main sponsor of Qatar’s national teams at senior and junior levels in a deal that builds upon a long-term collaboration. Shell has sponsored Qatar’s domestic knockout club competition, the Emir Cup, for eight consecutive years, and in February it and the QFA announced the launch of corporate social responsibility initiative Koora Time, which focuses on improving the health and well-being of the country’s youth through football.

Wael Sawan, managing director and chairman of Qatar Shell Companies, said: “Our partnership is a great opportunity to engage very closely with the fans to promote and facilitate greater access to the sport at a grassroots level, hence supporting the development of football in Qatar as the country gets ready for the FIFA World Cup in 2022.”

QFA president Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmad Al Thani added: “This announcement caps a great year of participation between the two organisations following the successes of the Koora Time initiative and the Emir Cup. Through working closely with Qatar Shell, we are hoping to continue to inspire greater participation in football at a grassroots level across Qatar.”
