River Plate extends historic ties to Adidas

14 Sep 2012

Adidas has extended one of its longest-running kit partnerships by renewing its deal with Argentine giant River Plate through to December 2018.

The partnership between the German sportswear giant and the Buenos Aires club first began 30 years ago. Adidas has reportedly only enjoyed lengthier partnerships with the German Football Association and Bayern Munchen.

“The extension of our contract with River Plate confirms our successful and long-term relationship,” said Walter Koll, general manager of Adidas Argentina, according to the Maquina do Esporte website. “We are proud to sponsor the club and continue this bond. The announcement reinforces our position as the leading brand in Argentina.”

The announcement comes as River Plate continues its recovery from one of the lowest points in its history. In 2011, River suffered the indignity of relegation to the Primera B Nacional for the first time in its 110-year history. However, the club bounced straight back earning promotion to the Primera Division for the current 2012-13 campaign.
