MTN continues to back Africa’s richest cup competition
01 Aug 2012
MTN South Africa has signed a three-year extension to its title sponsorship of domestic cup competition the MTN8.
The telecommunications group will lend its name to the event through to 2014 in a new agreement with South Africa’s Premier Soccer League (PSL). The MTN8 sees the top-eight teams from the PSL compete for the R8 million (US$974,000) winner-takes-all prize – a cash sum that makes it Africa’s richest cup competition.
PSL chairman, Dr. Irvin Khoza, said: “It is crisp, competitive and most of all, it is engaging. It is a season’s opener high on talk time. Cup competitions don’t come better than MTN8. Like a catwalk is to fashion revelation, MTN8 provides a platform and opportunity for supporters and fans to see the revelation of players for the new season.”
MTN SA’s chief marketing officer, Serame Taukobong, added: “After a successful and mutually beneficial partnership over the past four years with the PSL, which has benefited local football and invested in numerous social uplifting projects, amongst a number of notable achievements, we saw it befitting that we continue to invest in local football development in the country while connecting fans with their passion for the beautiful game through epic football tales and unique competitions.”
