Huawei teams up with Atletico during Madrid derby

Atletico de Madrid agreed a one-off shirt sponsorship deal that saw the logo of Chinese telecommunications firm Huawei emblazoned across its shirt for Wednesday’s evening’s derby clash against Real Madrid.
Atletico has been without a permanent shirt sponsor since its deal with automotive company Kia expired at the end of last season. However, Huawei agreed the one-game deal which granted it major exposure in one of La Liga’s biggest games of the season. The agreement marked the company first move into the Spanish sports sponsorship market.
Atletico de Madrid president, Enrique Cerezo, said: “Atletico de Madrid is one of the most valuable brands in Spain, which has been recognised as one of the most prestigious brands to represent the image in Spain and throughout the world, and is also developing a major international expansion plan to consolidate our brand worldwide. Our team walks hand in hand with major international companies, leaders in their respective sectors, as irrefutable evidence that our brand arouses interest in all of them.”
Walter Ji, director of Huawei Spain and Portugal, added: “Our company is experiencing a significant moment in the Spanish market and Atletico Madrid have contributed to showing the public that we show our strength and commitment in Spain. In fact, this exclusive sponsorship supports our goal of becoming a major global mobile phone brand.” However, it was an unhappy evening for the home team as Real restored its four-point lead at the top of La Liga with a 4-1 victory over at the Vicente Calderon.
