Huawei builds on Spanish football interest with LFP deal

The Spanish Football League (LFP) has agreed a two-year sponsorship deal with Chinese telecommunications firm Huawei.

Under the agreement, which has a one-year extension clause, Huawei will become the League’s technology partner under the category of smartphones. The partnership incorporates branding rights to the Primera Division and Segunda Division, with the potential to develop exclusive Spanish football content for Huawei phones. The agreement sees Huawei make a serious move into the Spanish football market following previous partnerships with leading Primera Division club Atletico de Madrid. In August 2012, Huawei acquired the club’s shirt sponsorship rights for two league games and its UEFA Super Cup clash against Chelsea. The deal came after Atletico agreed a one-off shirt sponsorship contract with Huawei for the 2011-12 season’s home derby clash against Real Madrid.

LFP president Javier Tebas said: “Without doubt, with this agreement the LFP further enhances its projection in markets in other continents such as Asia. The positive sporting values we represent are primarily one of the reasons that Huawei has seen football as a platform to achieve leadership.”

Walter Ji, CEO of Huawei Technologies Spain and Portugal, added: “We are delighted with the start of this collaboration with the LFP which will certainly be a boost in our efforts to reach our consumers. At Huawei we want to offer the best devices for demanding users, and this agreement will allow us to reinforce this strategy from the values that represent football and sport in general.”
