CONMEBOL banks on Santander with Recopa Sudamericana partnership

Santander has extended its presence in South American football by agreeing a three-year deal to become the title sponsor of the Recopa Sudamericana competition.

The South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) announced the deal ahead of Wednesday’s first leg of the 2012 tournament, which pits the winner of the Copa Libertadores against the victor of the Copa Sudamericana. Santander already holds the title sponsorship of the Copa Libertadores, South America’s leading club competition, while Bridgestone holds the rights to the Copa Sudamericana.

The financial services giant will now become the title sponsor and official bank of the Recopa Sudamericana for the 2012, 2013 and 2014 editions of the tournament. CONMEBOL said in a statement: “This new sponsorship demonstrates once again the maximum involvement of Santander with the sport in Latin America. The bank becomes the main sponsor of the CONMEBOL club competitions and participated from the 2011 edition of the Copa America, the most important national team tournament in the region. This new sponsorship consolidates Santander’s status as the ‘bank of football’ in Latin America.”

Wednesday’s first leg of the 2012 Recopa Sudamericana saw Universidad de Chile and Santos play out a goalless draw. The decisive second leg takes place at the Estadio Pacaembu in Sao Paulo on September 26.
